There is a restaurant in Portland, Oregon called The Bluehour. It has a beautiful interior with an atmospheric bar. I love the name, thinking that the hour between dusk and nightfall is the perfect time to meet in a chic bar for a glamorous drink! It also embodies the character of my favorite color.

Blue is my favorite color

…..me and the rest of the word. It does not matter where you live or what your socio-economic status is or what gender or age you are – blue is the universal favorite color of the majority of people on the planet. And as we age, blue becomes even more popular. (Google it if you don’t believe me!)

My preferred blue is dark and inky – a moody blue – a blue that is the color of the sky right before it gets completely dark – the blue hour. Place has a color called “Night Sky” that captures this feeling. It is a blue that is deep and complex – blue with a lot of black in it. Think of classic blue fountain pen ink mixed with a little India ink and you will have it. I started a blue color inspiration board a couple of years ago when I first noticed this color blue coming back. The board has become so big it has nearly taken over my wall.

Blue – especially dark blue, cycles through fashion every few years and fashion is a good predictor for what will turn up in home interiors and accessories. One of those blue cycles is happening now and there are a lot of beautiful and complex dark blue trends in fashion including blue handbags and shoes that are making the scene. I get excited when I can add something deep blue to my New York – black wardrobe.

It is also wonderful to see all manner of deep, complex and dramatic dark blue trends in interior design as well.

I would not want to live in a room that was too blue, but I always need to have some blue around me. An accent chair, a statement wall, a pile of pillows, an indigo bed cover….all things that can be changed out when the blue mood recedes. But for now, these touches of blue can add a hint of drama and mystery – that color of the blue hour.
